‘Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) is Scotland’s curriculum for children and young people aged 3 to 18. Curriculum for Excellence builds on the solid foundations developed in the critical years of pre-birth to 3 which is supported by the National Pre-Birth to Three Guidance and the guidance in Building the Ambition for those working with children aged 0 to 5’. (Education Scotland)
‘Active learning is learning which engages and challenges children’s thinking using real-life and imaginary situations. All areas of the curriculum can be enriched and developed through play.’ (A Curriculum for Excellence: Building the Curriculum 2)
The early level within CfE takes children from 3 years through to the end of Primary 1 helping to promote smooth transition and progression through the sectors. There are 8 curriculum areas 3 of which are:
Early Literacy – literacy is fundamental to all areas of learning as it unlocks access to the wider curriculum. Being literate increases opportunities for the individual in all aspects of life, lays the foundations for lifelong learning and work.
Early Numeracy - numeracy is a skill for life, learning and work. Having well developed numeracy allows young people to be more confident in social settings and enhances enjoyment in a large number of leisure activities. Being numerate helps us to function responsibly in everyday life and contribute to society.
Health and Wellbeing – learning in health and wellbeing ensures that children develop the knowledge and understanding, skills capabilities and attributes which they need for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing now and in the future.
